Key Ingredient: What makes it so Important?
Polysorbate 80 also know widely as Poly 80 is a key ingredient in quality bath bombs. The usage rate is 1 - 20 % of the total ingredient mix. All singular bath bomb recipes call for 5-12 grams of Poly 80. This depends on the oils and colorants used.
So what is Poly 80:
Polysorbate 80 is a nonionic surfactant and emulsifier often used in foods and cosmetics. This synthetic compound is a viscous, water-soluble yellow liquid.
What does Poly 80 do?:
Polysorbate 80 is an emulsifier that helps the oils and colours in your bath bombs disperse more evenly in the bathwater rather than pooling on top.
What products is it used in?
Polysorbate 80 is a versatile and useful ingredient, so it is present in quite a few products. Here is a short, generalized list of where it is most often found:
• Food shortening
• Chewing Gum
• Ice Cream
• Skin Creams
Why is it so important in bath bombs:
As mentioned above Poly 80 helps to disperse the oils in the products evenly. It also helps the colourants not rise to the surface. Has anyone ever experienced leaving the tub looking like an Oompa Loompa? This means there was no Poly 80 and the colourant stuck to you instead of the water. This also extremely helps to reduce the risk of colourant damaging your tub. Although we bath bomb makers can not ensure that your bathtub is film free before use where residual colour may stick it is far easier to clean a filmed coloured bath with a quick rinse than a stained bath.
This is why we at Lovely & Bubbly feel it is so important to include Poly 80 in our products and to adjust the levels especially with darker colours such as black mica or Charcoal.
